3 Days Akagera Wildlife Safari to Visit Akagera National Park for game drives and a boat cruise safari to search for wildlife. The only savannah protected area of Rwanda; Akagara is famous for harboring the Big Five African mammal species which include lions, black and white rhinos, cape buffaloes and African elephant. Among other mammal species include giraffe, common zebras, waterbucks, topi, impalas, oribis, hippos, Nile crocodiles and over 500 species of birds including the Shoebill stork.

Akagera is also a scenic and diverse landscape of rolling hills, open plains, woodlands, and a mosaic of 7 lakes and wetlands created by River Akagera, which flows through the southeast part of the park along the border with Tanzania. You will explore its rich ecosystem by 4×4 a game drive safari vehicle and a boat cruise.

Akagera is managed by the African Parks Network under a long-term renewable partnership with Rwandan government that begun in 2010. They have a great job of reintroducing black and white rhinos and lions, and the population is now growing. Visiting the park helps to support conservation efforts which you will learn about law enforcement and local community.

Detailed 3 days Akagera wildlife safari itinerary

Day 1: Transfer from Kigali to Akagera National Park

You will be picked from airport or hotel in Kigali by our driver guide and the journey will take about 2 hour and 30-minute drive depending on the traffic and the stopover that you will make on the way. After arriving at the gate entrance, you will be able to clear with the ranger and then drive directly to the Akagera visitor information center before you can check into your lodge or continue with a game drive safari activity depending on the time. You will have lunch and relax and after go for the boat cruise at Ihema Lake where you will spot hippos, crocodiles and several species of wildlife. After you drive to your lodge and have the overnight stay.

Day 2: Day and night game drives in Akagera

You will wake up early in the morning for a cup of coffee and later your driver will pick and drive you to the park for the game viewing. You will look out for the Big 5 African mammals including elephants, buffaloes, topi, zebras, impalas, and the lions and rhinos which have been introduced into the park recently. You will spend 4 to six hours on the game drive safaris traversing both the north and south area of Akagera National Park.

Day 3: Transfer back to Kigali

After having the breakfast prepared by your lodge, you will drive back to Kigali with the en-route game drive. You may decide to checkout immediately without doing the last game drive. This means that it depends on the time you booked your departure flight or other engagements you may have.
