Detailed 3 days Gorilla Trekking Volcanoes itinerary

Day 1: Kigali city to Volcanoes National Park

Pick up at Kigali international airport or at the hotel by your guide and transfer to Volcanoes national park. The 2-hour drives offer scenic views of rolling hills and the Virunga Mountains when you arrive in Kinigi near the park. Check in at your lodge and enjoy dinner and overnight with sounds of the jungle. Get some rest and prepare your hiking essentials for gorilla trekking starting early in the morning the following day.

Day 2: Gorilla tracking and cultural tour

Following breakfast, you will proceed to Kinigi, the park headquarters, where the park warden will advise you on gorilla rules. A team of guides, porters and armed rangers will escort on an expedition traversing bamboo and montane forests vegetation on the higher slopes of the volcano at 2,000 meters above sea level to search for the pre-allocated gorilla family. Once the gorillas are found, you will spend 1 hour with the gentle giants and trek back to the visitor center. Enjoy lunch at the lodge and afterwards, go for an evening walk.

Visit the Gorilla Guardian’s village, a unique cultural center where ex-poachers promote culture to generate income. Here, you can sit back and watch the entertaining show or participating in the traditional marriage ceremony, Intore dance performances, shoot a bow and arrow. It is an opportunity to meet Rwandan people and learn about their culture while indirectly supporting their livelihoods. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Transfer back to Kigali city

After having a leisurely breakfast at the lodge, you will drive back to Kigali city. Visit the Kigali Genocide memorial and enjoy lunch as part of a quick Kigali city tour. Depending on how much time you have, there are opportunities to visit Inema art gallery among other Kigali city attractions such as Rwanda art museum. Thereafter, you will transfer to the airport for your onward flight or the location of your choice. End of tour.
